From Burnout to Balance: A Faith-Led Entrepreneur’s Journey to Holy Margin

By Rachel Roach | Rooted and Ready

Let me start with this:

I didn’t leave the classroom to burn out in my living room.

But for a while… that’s exactly what almost happened.

After 14 years as a public school teacher, I transitioned from the school bell to entrepreneurship with the hope of building a business that allowed me to be present with my family. I had dreams of flexibility, peace, purpose—and let’s be honest—finally breathing again.

But even in the freedom of working from home, I quickly found myself carrying the same striving spirit I thought I had left behind.

When Hustle Follows You Home

As a faith-led entrepreneur, I knew deep down that God had called me into this new season. I had prayed about it, prepared for it, and made the leap.

But just a few weeks in, the pressure crept back in.

  • I was saying yes to every opportunity.

  • I was working late into the night—long after my family was asleep.

  • I was constantly comparing, constantly performing, constantly proving.

I thought I had escaped burnout.
Turns out, I had just repackaged it.

“Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain.”
— Psalm 127:1

God was clear: If I was going to build something sustainable, I had to stop striving and start surrendering.

Shifting from Hustle to Holy Margin

The change didn’t happen all at once.
It started with quiet, Spirit-led nudges that challenged the way I’d always done things.

I started creating boundaries—real ones.

  • I gave myself permission to shut the laptop at 5:00.

  • I said “no” to things that didn’t align with my season.

  • I stopped treating rest like a reward and started treating it like obedience.

I didn’t want to just run a business—I wanted to steward one.
I wanted my days to reflect not just what I could accomplish, but who I was becoming in Christ.

“Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest… For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
— Matthew 11:28–30

When I let go of hustle, I made room for holy.

What Balance Actually Looks Like

As a Christian business owner and a work-from-home mom, my days are rarely “balanced” in the traditional sense. Some days, my business gets more attention. Other days, my kids need every ounce of me.

But balance in the Kingdom isn’t about keeping everything equal.

It’s about listening to the Holy Spirit and letting Him direct what gets your energy in each season.

Real balance is obedience—not just optimization.

If You're a Burned Out Mompreneur, Hear This:

You don’t have to be everything to everyone.
You don’t have to prove your worth through productivity.
You don’t have to sacrifice your peace to walk in your purpose.

If you’re a faith-led mom building a business, there is room for you to thrive and rest.

God isn’t rushing you.
He’s inviting you to slow down and trust that He is building something with you.

And if no one has told you lately:
You’re doing better than you think.
The fruit of your obedience is coming.
