What It Really Looks Like to Build a Business With Toddlers at Your Feet

The messy, sacred, grace-filled work of motherhood and entrepreneurship

By Rachel Roach | Rooted and Ready

Running a business from home while raising little ones isn’t the Pinterest-perfect dream some people make it out to be. It’s noisy. It’s unpredictable. It’s holy ground.

I know, because I live it every day.

My 5-year-old and 2-year-old have been part of this business journey since the very beginning—coloring next to my desk, crashing Zoom calls with snack demands, and reminding me (often with sticky fingers) why I chose this path in the first place.

Building a Business Beside My Babies

When I left the classroom in 2022, I didn’t just walk away from a career—I walked toward a calling.

I knew I wanted to be present with my kids. I knew I didn’t want to miss first steps, doctor’s appointments, or spontaneous dance parties in the kitchen. But I also knew God had given me gifts—strategic, creative, administrative gifts—that weren’t meant to stay dormant.

So I stepped out in faith. I launched my business. And I’ve been learning every day since what it means to serve clients and my family with excellence.

It’s Not Always Peaceful—But It Is Purposeful

There are hard days. Days when the to-do list is longer than the nap window. Days when I question whether I’m giving enough—to my clients, to my kids, to myself. And yes, there are plenty of tears. From all of us.

But every single day, I’m reminded that this is the life I prayed for. The kind of chaos I chose—one where I can pause a task to help tie a shoe or read a book before naptime. One where my kids see me working hard, but never wonder where I am.

The Lessons I’m Passing On

This lifestyle is more than a logistical choice—it’s a legacy.

My children are growing up watching their mom build something from scratch. They’re seeing how work can serve people, not just paychecks. They’re learning about responsibility, patience, problem-solving, and faith. And even though they're young, they’re already asking questions, offering opinions (“that post needs more color, Mom!”), and cheering me on.

They’re learning that a woman can love her family and love her work. That both can coexist. That the real “balance” isn’t about perfection—it’s about presence.

“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
—Proverbs 22:6

Why This Matters to You

If you’re reading this as a mom who’s wondering if she really can do both—build a business and raise babies—let me be the voice that says: Yes, you can.

No, it won’t be easy. Yes, it will be loud and messy and unpredictable. But it will also be one of the most sacred, refining, beautiful things you’ll ever do.

Let go of the hustle. Embrace the holy. Build your business at the pace of your family. And trust that the same God who gave you this dream will equip you to walk it out—even when there’s Play-Doh on your keyboard and someone’s yelling “MOM!” during your client call.
